Book Review- If you Must Know by Jamie Beck

I am so pleased to bring you my Book review of If You Must Know by Jamie Beck!

Release Date 6/1/20

About the Book:

Life turns upside down for two sisters in Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jamie Beck’s emotional novel about how secrets and differences can break—or bind—a family.

Sisters Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules—at the school where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter, wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart—in love and otherwise—living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her fledgling bath-products business.

The sisters are content leading separate but happy lives in their hometown of Potomac Point until everything is upended by lies that force them to confront unsettling truths about their family, themselves, and each other. For sisters as different as these two, building trust doesn’t come easily—especially with one secret still between them—but it may be the only way to save their family.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars from Miss W !!!!

Let me first say that I have been a fan of Jamie Beck’s romances for quite some time.  I would classify If You Must Know as women’s fiction. But do not worry! There is romance in this book and a bit of suspense along with a story about sisters with a strong complicated family dynamic throughout the book.

I LOVE stories about sisters. I love my sister so much , but we are different.

Amanda Foster and Erin Turner are totally different. The author does an excellent job of writing well crafted, complicated, flawed relatable characters.

The plot is well developed and I was rapidly turning the page to see what would happen next. I really enjoyed the evolution of the characters relationship with each other as their bond that was once almost broken begins to mend.

A great read, If You Must Know is Book 1 in the Potomac Point Series and I cannot wait to read the next book and see what happens next.

Book Review- The Ruby of the Sea

I am pleased to bring you my review for The Ruby of the Sea by Peggy Lampman as part of the book blog tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours.

About the Book:

From the award-winning author of The Promise Kitchen comes a riveting new story of twin sisters caught in their mother’s crosshairs on what to do about their disturbed younger sister.

Lush with devastating secrets, lies, romance and psychological drama…”You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying.”

After aimlessly traveling the country for fifteen years, Linnea Chandler returns to her hometown of Key West, Florida keeping the genesis of a life-altering phobia to herself–not a good idea, as she comes to find out. The 19th Century lighthouse that she, her parents and two sisters call home also has a troubled past, carrying the frightening myth that eerily mirrors the mystery of her younger sister today. Should Linnea run while she can?

The women must decide to what extremes they are willing to go to protect their secrets. Ignore the brutality behind the retrieval of spoils from a fatal shipwreck in 1857? Defy a 2017 hurricane threatening to pummel their town? And when their world is upended, do the women have the strength to move forward?

Miss W’s Review:

A 5 Star READ!

The Ruby of the Sea is a POWERFUL book. This books is a well crafted book that is expertly written and and deals with some heavy mental health topics such as sexual abuse and bipolar disorder. This is a story about family and sisters, three sisters to be exact. A compelling story about three sisters and the love they share for each other, but also the secrets they hold. The story is written in alternating perspectives of each of the sisters POV.

This endearing, powerful book will take you on an emotional ride that had me crying as I anxiously turned the pages to read more of these powerful women’s story and the heartbreak that mental illness has taken on in their lives. I cried for them and for me, as I have experienced much of what the author so respectfully represented in the sisters story.

There are some funny moments along with the endearing family dynamics between the sisters.

Key West was a great backdrop for this story and I really enjoyed reading about the 19th Century Lighthouse Legend.

Miss W’s Review:

I really enjoyed Life is a 4-Letter Word.

The writing style of a series of 40 short essays makes for a easy, fun , albeit inspiring read.

The chapters all held a positive theme with a “moral of the story” that was written in language that was easy to understand.

This book is one that I will go back to time and time again as it is timeless in the positivity that we all need in our lives.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars. I don’t think my review can possibly do this book justice, I can only hope you will pick up this book and see how wonderful it is for yourself and your family members.

This is a book that I found very interesting and enjoyed, as much as you can enjoy a book about cancer. The author shares his experiences, both good and bad with his battle with cancer starting at the young age of 19. Additionally the author’s friends also share their personal stories about cancer and how it affected them.

As a cancer survivor, this was an inspiring read. The author gives advice for those battling cancer and their loved ones. The author does a good job demonstrating his authentic voice with his experiences that are real and raw yet heartwarming.

I WISH this book was available when I was battling cancer. My motto has always been that “cancer is not who you are, it is what happened to you” and the authors inspiration that Cancer should not define you is one that I related to.

I am grateful to be in remission and I am grateful for those that came before me and came after me.

This is a must read for anyone. Everyone is impacted by cancer one way or another and this book is written in a way that is inspiring and uplifting and real.

About the Author:

Book Review- Island Affair by Priscilla Oliveras

I am so excited to bring you my review of Island Affair by one of my very favorite authors, Priscilla Oliveras. Island Affair is the first book in a new “Keys to Love” Series!

About the Book:

Release Date: 4/28/2020

Kensington Publishing Corp.

Sought-after social media influencer Sara Vance, in recovery from an eating disorder, is coming into her own, with a potential career expansion on the horizon. Despite the good news, her successful siblings (and their perfect spouses) have a way of making her feel like the odd one out. So, when her unreliable boyfriend is a no-show for a Florida family vacation, Sara recruits Luis Navarro—a firefighter paramedic and dive captain willing to play the part of her smitten fiancé . . .

Luis’s big Cuban familia has been in Key West for generations, and his quiet strength feeds off the island’s laidback style. Though guarded after a deep betrayal, he’ll always help someone in need—especially a spunky beauty with a surprising knowledge of Spanish curse words. Soon, he and Sara have memorized their “how we met” story and are immersed in family dinners, bike tours, private snorkeling trips . . . sharing secrets, and slow, melting kisses. But when it’s time for Sara to return home, will their fake relationship fade like the stunning sunset . . . or blossom into something beautiful?

Miss W’s Review:

Island Affair by Priscilla Oliveras is a stand out romance that literally stole my heart.

First of all, the author nails the fake fiancé trope, one of my favorites!

The characters were complex, flawed and well fleshed out. I really loved Sara and Luiz’s story.

Sara Vance is a social media influencer and heads to Key West to meet with her mom and celebrate that her mom has overcome cancer. Her boyfriend was supposed to be there with her, but cuts out .

Can we talk about the greatest Meet Cute?
Sarah is in the airport crying and in walks Luiz, a Firefighter whose home is in Key West and she asks him to fill in for her boyfriend, just for a week.

The author has an incredible gift for descriptive writing and the description of Key West and Mallory Square was so fantastic, I felt like I was immersed in the island with my toes in the sand. I cannot forget the food! The descriptions of the food were fantastic and I was craving a cuban sandwich more than once.

I appreciate more than I can possibly say how the author handled the topics of cancer, eating disorders and mental health and how Sara and Luiz dealt with these issues.

Another theme that I really enjoyed while reading the story was forgiveness, forgiving ourselves and others around us and how this can impact our relationships.

An incredible romance read that was so much more. I look forward to reading the next book in this fantastic Keys to Love Series.

Book Review- The Last Bathing Suit Beauty

It brings me great joy to be a Tall Poppy Blogger.

Today on the blog I have a review of The Last Bathing Suit Beauty by Amy Sue Nathan!!!

About the Book:

Publication Date: 4/1/2020

A former beauty queen faces the secrets of her past—for herself and the sake of her family’s future—in a heartfelt novel about fate, choices, and second chances.

Everything seemed possible in the summer of 1951. Back then Betty Stern was an eighteen-year-old knockout working at her grandparents’ lakeside resort. The “Catskills of the Midwest” was the perfect place for Betty to prepare for bigger things. She’d head to college in New York City. Her career as a fashion editor would flourish. But first, she’d enjoy a wondrous last summer at the beach falling deeply in love with an irresistible college boy and competing in the annual Miss South Haven pageant. On the precipice of a well-planned life, Betty’s future was limitless.

Decades later, the choices of that long-ago season still reverberate for Betty, now known as Boop. Especially when her granddaughter comes to her with a dilemma that echoes Boop’s memories of first love, broken hearts, and faraway dreams. It’s time to finally face the past—for the sake of her family and her own happiness. Maybe in reconciling the life she once imagined with the life she’s lived, Boop will discover it’s never too late for a second chance.

Miss W’s Review:

The Last Bathing Beauty is a gem of a novel! I was transported back to the summer of 1951 in South Haven, Michigan, an area that is on Lake Michigan.

We meet Betty Claire Stern spending the last summer before college at the family’s summer resort. Not only is romance on her mind but she is competing in a beauty pageant.

I really enjoyed the alternating timeline between 1951 and 2017 reading about Betty in her 80’s.

There are family secrets to discover as the story unfolds.

The descriptive writing puts me right there in the story of a time when life was slower and simpler.

The characters are complex, complicated and incredibly endearing.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

Book Review- Real Estate Rescue by Tracy McLaughlin

Delighted to bring you a book review of Real Estate Rescue by Tracy McLaughlin in partner with Suzy Approved Book Tours.

About The Book:

Release Date:  April 14, 2020

Publisher: Mango Publishing

If ignorance is bliss, American home buyers and sellers should be in a state of rapture,” says Tracy McLaughlin, a Bay Area real estate broker ranked #1 in residential sales every year for the past 15 years. Every day, she watches buyers and sellers make impulsive decisions based on very limited information that lead to serious financial consequences. She knows what people who trust Zillow or don’t: in nearly every real estate transaction, buyers and sellers leave behind money—hundreds of thousands, even millions, of dollars—in the process.

In Real Estate Rescue with Tracy McLaughlin: How Not to Leave Money on the Table in the Sale and Purchase of Your Home (Mango; April 2020), Tracy McLaughlin arms buyers and sellers with a comprehensive, strategic blueprint to overcome the cost of ignorance and maximize the value of their investment. Information about homes and markets only scratches the surface. As an expert who thoroughly understands her craft, McLaughlin reveals the wide range of overlapping skills and discipline essential to success in residential real estate.

Chapter by chapter, Real Estate Rescue with Tracy McLaughlin covers each critical step in the home sale and acquisition process, explaining it in depth. Along the way, McLaughlin delves into the psychology of homebuyers and sellers, calling attention to common emotional traps. By following her practical and rational approach, prospective home buyers and sellers will gain an edge on mastering:

• The mechanics and art of home valuation—which has nothing to do with what you paid for your home, what you need to net from the sale, or how attached you feel.

• Pricing right—with the aim of getting the highest offer without letting your home be a high-priced bread maker.

• Preparing a home for sale—from timing the market to staging a home for buyers to see themselves living in, with design tips and insights into environmental suggestions.

• Marketing and branding a home—using the power of storytelling to engage buyers while keeping the seller’s emotions in check.

• Fundamental matters of permits, inspections, and full disclosure, plus a list of the critical things buyers should be aware of and cautious about, yet often overlook.

• The dangers of trusting a friend or relative who dabbles in real estate with managing your largest asset. McLaughlin can share the story of a prominent divorcee whose faith in her dear friend, a socialite with a real estate license who hadn’t worked in over 20 years, wound up costing her half a million dollars—and other cautionary tales.

Tracy McLaughlin has a remarkable real estate success story. In 2019, after nearly 15 years of standing out as the #1 producer in residential sales in Marin Country, she was recruited by Mauricio Umansky, award-winning entrepreneur and real estate trailblazer, to lead the Marin County offices for his state-of-the-art luxury real estate brokerage, The Agency. Founded in 2011, The Agency has grown into a global company with more than 500 agents and 27 offices, ranking among the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the country.

The typical American homeowner has 40 percent of their wealth tied up in their home, notes McLaughlin, driving home: no buyer or seller can afford the price of ignorance. Informative and empowering, Real Estate Rescue with Tracy McLaughlin: How Not to Leave Money on the Table in the Sale and Purchase of Your Home is a guide well worth the investment.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars!

Real Estate Rescue is a great book that is a fantastic resource that provides so much information for potential home buyers and those selling their homes.

There is so much information and valuable information in this book that I have not seen anywhere else.

The pictures were really fantastic in getting the idea across to readers.

I especially liked the step by step guide to the process of home ownership.

This book is empowering and informational in showing specific ways to not get taken advantage of and to know all the inside lingo in the industry.

Highly recommend !
