Book Review- The Vampire Book Club by Nancy Warren

I always get excited when one of my favorite authors comes out with a new series!

Today on the blog I am reviewing The Vampire Book Club by Nancy Warren.

This is the first book in a brand new series and releases on 5/6/2020!!!

About the Book:

I was a divorced, middle-aged witch banished to Ireland.
My life could be summed up in a limerick…

There once was a misguided witch
Who tried a man’s fate to switch
Her punishment set
To Ireland she must get
But better than feathers and pitch!

With a name like Quinn Calahan I sounded as Irish as a leprechaun dancing a jig on a four leafed clover, but the truth was, I’d never been closer to the emerald isle than drinking green beer at the St Patrick’s day street party in Boston until I messed up so badly I had to leave the US. I was offered a job in a tiny village in Ireland that no one’s ever heard of. And I think that was the point in sending me there. How much trouble could a divorced, middle-aged witch get into in a village that boasted very few residents, one crumbling castle that attracted no tourists, and a post office that was only open Mondays and Thursdays?

You’d be surprised.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Fabulous stars!!!!

The Vampire Book Club is the first book in a brand new series by Nancy Warren.
I absolutely love the Vampire Knitting Club by this author and I was thrilled to
see a new series. I really love this book, especially that the main character is older.

The story is set in a tiny village in Ireland. The setting was described so detailed I felt as if I was there.

The characters were quirky, flawed and well developed.

The mystery is multi-layered, not only the murder itself but the mystery of how the main character was banished to this small town in Ireland for breaking the witchy rules.

I really enjoyed this book and loved reading a few familiar characters from the Vampire Knitting Club.

This is a series not to miss!!!!

Book Review- The First Emma by Camille Di Maio

I am excited to bring you my book review of The First Emma by Camille Di Maio on book blogger tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours. This book is based on a true story and I am thrilled to share my thoughts with you.

About The Book:

Publication Date: May 5, 2020

Camille Di Maio’s fifth novel THE FIRST EMMA is the true story of Emma Koehler, whose tycoon husband Otto was killed in a crime-of-the-century murder by one of his two mistresses—both also named Emma—and her unlikely rise as CEO of a brewing empire during Prohibition. When a chance to tell her story to a young teetotaler arises, a tale unfolds of love, war, beer, and the power of women.

Miss W’s Review:

5 incredible stars!

I am a huge fan of Camille Di Maio having read The Way of Beauty and The Beautiful Strangers.

I was really excited to read The First Emma and boy was I blown away.

This novel is based on true events, which I found fascinating.

The First Emma is an extremely well written story of Emma Koelher. Emma Koehler is the widow of Otto Koehler who had owned a Brewing company in the early 1920’s.

Emma has not lived an easy life and her late husband has extramarital affairs with two other women named Emma who were immigrants from Germany. After enduring a car accident the other two Emma’s came to care for the “First Emma”, one of whom possibly killed Otto.

About 20 years later , The First Emma hires an assistant to tell her story, and that is when we meet Mabel.

I was ABSOLUTELY captivated by this story. The research the author did is authentic and quite impressive.

I very much enjoyed the alternating timelines between the 1920’s and 1943 when Mable was helping Emma write the book about her life.

Emma is fiercely independent and does not care so much about the affairs as she does about keeping power in the brewing company.

The First Emma is a fast paced historical fiction story that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I fell in love with Emma and her fierceness and determination.

This book is a MUST READ ! I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!

About the Author:

Camille recently left an award-winning real estate career in San Antonio to become a full-time writer. Along with her husband of twenty-one years, she enjoys raising their four children. She has a bucket list that is never-ending, and uses her adventures to inspire her writing. She’s lived in Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California, and spends enough time in Hawai’i to feel like a local. She’s traveled to four continents (so far), and met Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. She just about fainted when she had a chance to meet her musical idol, Paul McCartney, too. Camille studied political science in college, but found working on actual campaigns much more fun. She overdoses on goodies at farmers markets (justifying them by her support for local bakeries) and belts out Broadway tunes whenever the moment strikes. There’s almost nothing she wouldn’t try, so long as it doesn’t involve heights, roller skates, or anything illegal.

Her books include:

THE MEMORY OF US – Amazon bestseller, finalist for the Holt Medallion Award for Literary Excellence.

BEFORE THE RAIN FALLS – Holt Medallion finalist, GDRWA finalist

As Rosie begins a desperate search to find her sister, she is not just worried about what this man might have done to Laura. She’s worried about what Laura may have done to him…

Miss W’s Book Review:

5 THRILLING Stars!!!!

The Night Before by Wendy Walker is an incredible novel of suspense that I could not put down.

Laura Lochner was left completely devastated and emotionally drained after her last relationship. In order to move forward she decides to move back to Connecticut to live with her sister Rosie and her family.

Laura goes out one night to meet a man she met on a dating site. When she doesn’t come back, Rosie and her husband try to find out what really happened to her and start unraveling the clues to what happened to her sister “The Night Before”.

The author creates a well developed story that is perfectly paced.

The characters are strong, complicated and believable.

Not only is this a suspenseful read, but the family dynamics are well developed an an integral part of the story line. There were so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming.

The story is told between alternating timelines of past and present and from the different characters point of view. I particularly enjoyed this as a way to get into each characters head.

The plot twists keep coming at you until its shocking end!

Highly recommend this excellent psychological thriller.

Book Review- Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson

Today I am thrilled to bring you my review of Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson.

I was highly anticipating this book for SO long, and I was not disappointed!

About the Book:

Publication Date: 5/19/2020

Berkley Publishing Group

When their foster-turned-adoptive mother suddenly dies, four brothers struggle to keep open the doors of her beloved Harlem knitting shop.

Jesse Strong is known for two things: his devotion to his adoptive mom, Mama Joy, and his reputation for breaking hearts. When Mama Joy unexpectedly passes away, he and his brothers have different plans for what to do with Strong Knits, their neighborhood knitting store. Jesse wants to keep the store open. His brothers want to tie off loose ends and close shop….

Part-time shop employee Kerry Fuller has kept her crush on Jesse a secret. When she overhears his impassioned plea to his brothers to keep the knitting shop open, she volunteers to help. Unlike Jesse, Kerry knows the “knitty-gritty” of the business, and together they make plans to reinvent Strong Knits for a new generation.

But the more time they spend together, the stronger the chemistry builds between them. Kerry, knowing Jesse’s history, doesn’t believe their relationship can last longer than she can knit one, purl two. But Jesse is determined to prove to her that he can be the man for her forever and always. After all, real men knit.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars!!!!!!

Real Men Knit is a MUST READ!!!!! The author once again blows me away with her writing of family dynamics and closely woven (pun intended LOL) communities.

Friends to Lovers Trope, YES please!

The story revolves around a shop in Harlem, perfectly named Strong Knits. The matriarch, Mama Joy had adopted four boys . Mama Joy has recently passed away leaving the future of the story in jeopardy.

The story is written from two alternating perspectives, one of which is Kerry, who has been a worker and staple in the store for a very long time. Kerry has had a thing for Jesse one of the brothers since forever. The other perspective is written from Jesse. I loved that I was able to read both of these characters.

The romance of Jesse and Kerry gave me ALL THE FEELS !!!!

Jesse and Kerry band together to try and save the store.

The characters were complex, complicated and well fleshed out. I loved reading about the strong brothers and their love for each other and Mama Joy.

The inclusion of social media as a marketing tool was fun, timely and relevant.

I was not only rooting for the family, the romance, but also the store.

This story is a well written emotional, funny romance that I highly recommend.

Book Review- Finding Mrs. Ford

What an honor being on book blog tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours for the debut novel Finding Mrs. Ford by Deborah Goodrich Joyce

About the Book:

Paperback Release Date: April 7, 2020

Publisher: Post Hill Press

Mrs. Ford leads a privileged life. From her Blenheim spaniels to her cottage on the coast of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, she carefully curates her world. Hair in place, house in place, life in place, Susan Ford keeps it under control.

Early one morning in the summer of 2014, the past pays a call to collect. The FBI arrives to question her about a man from Iraq—a Chaldean Christian from Mosul—where ISIS has just seized control. Sammy Fakhouri, they say, is his name and they have taken him into custody, picked up on his way to her house.

Back in the summer of 1979, on the outskirts of a declining Detroit, college coed Susan meets charismatic and reckless Annie. They are an unlikely pair of friends but they each see something in the other—something they’d like to possess. Studious Susan is a moth to the flame that is Annie. Yet, it is dazzling Annie who senses that Susan will be the one who makes it out of Detroit.

Together, the girls navigate the minefields of a down-market disco where they work their summer jobs. It’s a world filled with pretty girls and powerful men, some of whom—like Sammy Fakhouri—happen to be Iraqi Chaldeans.

What happened in that summer of 1979 when Susan and Annie met? Why is Sammy looking for Susan all these years later? And why is Mrs. Ford lying?

Miss W’s Review:

An incredible 5 star debut novel!

Finding Mrs. Ford by Deborah Goodrich Royce is a well written suspenseful thriller.

The timeline alternates between the past in Detroit in the 1970’s and current day in Rhode Island.

I was captivated by the visual imagery and the well developed characters.
There were twists at every turn and the dialogue was written so well.

The plot was perfectly paced , this was a book that was REALLY hard to put down.

A suspenseful story that puts you on the edge of your seat. What a ride!

Highly recommend this debut novel!!!!

Book Review- If you Must Know by Jamie Beck

I am so pleased to bring you my Book review of If You Must Know by Jamie Beck!

Release Date 6/1/20

About the Book:

Life turns upside down for two sisters in Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jamie Beck’s emotional novel about how secrets and differences can break—or bind—a family.

Sisters Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules—at the school where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter, wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart—in love and otherwise—living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her fledgling bath-products business.

The sisters are content leading separate but happy lives in their hometown of Potomac Point until everything is upended by lies that force them to confront unsettling truths about their family, themselves, and each other. For sisters as different as these two, building trust doesn’t come easily—especially with one secret still between them—but it may be the only way to save their family.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars from Miss W !!!!

Let me first say that I have been a fan of Jamie Beck’s romances for quite some time.  I would classify If You Must Know as women’s fiction. But do not worry! There is romance in this book and a bit of suspense along with a story about sisters with a strong complicated family dynamic throughout the book.

I LOVE stories about sisters. I love my sister so much , but we are different.

Amanda Foster and Erin Turner are totally different. The author does an excellent job of writing well crafted, complicated, flawed relatable characters.

The plot is well developed and I was rapidly turning the page to see what would happen next. I really enjoyed the evolution of the characters relationship with each other as their bond that was once almost broken begins to mend.

A great read, If You Must Know is Book 1 in the Potomac Point Series and I cannot wait to read the next book and see what happens next.

About the Author:

Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Jamie Beck’s realistic and heartwarming stories have sold more than two million copies. She is a two-time Booksellers’ Best Award finalist, a National Readers’ Choice Award winner, and critics at Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist have respectively called her work “smart,” “uplifting,” and “entertaining.” In addition to writing novels, she enjoys dancing around the kitchen while cooking and hitting the slopes in Vermont and Utah. Above all, she is a grateful wife and mother to a very patient, supportive family.

Book Review- The Ruby of the Sea

I am pleased to bring you my review for The Ruby of the Sea by Peggy Lampman as part of the book blog tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours.

About the Book:

From the award-winning author of The Promise Kitchen comes a riveting new story of twin sisters caught in their mother’s crosshairs on what to do about their disturbed younger sister.

Lush with devastating secrets, lies, romance and psychological drama…”You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying.”

After aimlessly traveling the country for fifteen years, Linnea Chandler returns to her hometown of Key West, Florida keeping the genesis of a life-altering phobia to herself–not a good idea, as she comes to find out. The 19th Century lighthouse that she, her parents and two sisters call home also has a troubled past, carrying the frightening myth that eerily mirrors the mystery of her younger sister today. Should Linnea run while she can?

The women must decide to what extremes they are willing to go to protect their secrets. Ignore the brutality behind the retrieval of spoils from a fatal shipwreck in 1857? Defy a 2017 hurricane threatening to pummel their town? And when their world is upended, do the women have the strength to move forward?

Miss W’s Review:

A 5 Star READ!

The Ruby of the Sea is a POWERFUL book. This books is a well crafted book that is expertly written and and deals with some heavy mental health topics such as sexual abuse and bipolar disorder. This is a story about family and sisters, three sisters to be exact. A compelling story about three sisters and the love they share for each other, but also the secrets they hold. The story is written in alternating perspectives of each of the sisters POV.

This endearing, powerful book will take you on an emotional ride that had me crying as I anxiously turned the pages to read more of these powerful women’s story and the heartbreak that mental illness has taken on in their lives. I cried for them and for me, as I have experienced much of what the author so respectfully represented in the sisters story.

There are some funny moments along with the endearing family dynamics between the sisters.

Key West was a great backdrop for this story and I really enjoyed reading about the 19th Century Lighthouse Legend.

The writing style of a series of 40 short essays makes for a easy, fun , albeit inspiring read.

Miss W’s Review:

5 Stars. I don’t think my review can possibly do this book justice, I can only hope you will pick up this book and see how wonderful it is for yourself and your family members.

This is a book that I found very interesting and enjoyed, as much as you can enjoy a book about cancer. The author shares his experiences, both good and bad with his battle with cancer starting at the young age of 19. Additionally the author’s friends also share their personal stories about cancer and how it affected them.

As a cancer survivor, this was an inspiring read. The author gives advice for those battling cancer and their loved ones. The author does a good job demonstrating his authentic voice with his experiences that are real and raw yet heartwarming.

I WISH this book was available when I was battling cancer. My motto has always been that “cancer is not who you are, it is what happened to you” and the authors inspiration that Cancer should not define you is one that I related to.

I am grateful to be in remission and I am grateful for those that came before me and came after me.

This is a must read for anyone. Everyone is impacted by cancer one way or another and this book is written in a way that is inspiring and uplifting and real.

About the Author:

Brett M. Cordes is an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon in Houston, Texas. He has established a ten-year practice in and around the Texas Medical Center. After having fought cancer at the age of 19, Cordes was inspired to become a doctor.
